MARCH 2008 A CELEBRATION OF WOMEN FOR WOMEN

March 15, 2008 Saturday. SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF LUCENA (SIL) highlighted the celebration of INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S MONTH with a whole day of service activities.

As early as 8:00 AM SI officers and members  opened the medical mission for indigent women. Services included blood typing, blood pressure check, blood glucose test, dental services and bone scanning.  Medicines, vitamins and snacks were also distributed for free.

SI Vice President Dr. Meriam C. Bayaua lead the mission partners composed of  the nursing students of Calayan Educational Foundation, Inc., and, Sacred Heart College headed by Mrs. Amelia Vargas.  Other mission partners were SOLCOM Dental Staff, Red Cross Quezon Lucena Chapter, St. Veronica Clinical Laboratory, Carlos Super Drug Store, Pharex Healthcorp., Pascual Laboratories, Inc., and, Caltrate Plus, Wyeth Corporation.

The afternoon activity was educational with a legal forum assisted by SI member Atty. Sunshine Abcede.  Several social and legal issues affecting women’s rights, domestic violence, child abuse and child trafficking topics were tackled.   Likewise, a presentation of livelihood projects and food processing served as a big opportunity for prospective sources of income to help women improve their economic status.

The above services were all conducted in cooperation with the City Social Welfare and Development Office and Kalipunan ng mga Babaing Pinuno sa Lucena, Inc. (KBPLI), the local government of Lucena and Provincial Government of Quezon.
